Alternative Energy Systems

Alternative Energy Systems

Energy and Society

Sustainability is a major concern to today’s society. A central issue is how our future energy system can be based on renewable energy sources exclusively. Energy storage is gaining importance not only in this area, but also in the electric mobility sector.

For this spectrum of applications, the Alternative Energy Systems Group develops innovative methods relating to energy grids and battery systems.

Energy Grids

In the course of the energy transition in Germany and other parts of the world, conventional power plants are replaced by a large number of regenerative energy sources, in particular photovoltaics and wind power plants. These are mainly installed on the distribution grid level. The power generated on this level can only be distributed reasonably when the grid operators extend their grids. In addition, the bad predictability of renewable power generation, the high slew rate, and lacking controllability of the regenerative production capacity require a massive increase in storage capacities.

By using energy converters, such as power-to-gas units and combined heat and power plants, the electric, gas, and heat distribution grids can be coupled. In this way, the above challenges can be mastered effectively. However, control technologies still remain to be developed for the resulting multimodal distribution grids.

The Alternative Energy Systems Group, hence, conducts research along the complete design process of control systems for innovative methods in multimodal energy distribution systems.

Battery Systems

Due to the volatile character of renewable energies, intermediate storage of this energy in e.g. lithium-ion batteries is of crucial importance. Battery systems for electric energy storage also gain importance in electric mobility and entertainment electronics, the objective being to meet increasing demands in terms of range and availability.

To ensure safe and effective operation of battery systems, battery management systems (BMS) are applied. Frequently, they are based on imprecise heuristic methods, such as counting procedures to estimate the battery state. The IRS designs model-based methods for the automatic identification of the physical state of the battery during operation. When interconnecting a large number of cells, conventional BMS based on central architectures quickly reach their limits. For an efficient use of battery systems, IRS therefore studies new decentralized and distributed approaches to battery monitoring and control.
