Current Major Projects

IRS studies, applies, and further develops new control concepts and methods in a number of projects. Apart from projects funded by industry, IRS carries out publicly funded projects, such as projects funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), Federal Ministries (BMBF, BMWi) or the EU. Some ongoing large-scale research projects will be presented below.

PAKoS

Mobility is a decisive factor in everyday life. For this reason, new, advanced systems of human-machine interaction are to be developed, which enhance safety, comfort, and reliability. Automated driving has enormous potentials for increasing traffic safety. As regards the interaction between man and machine, safe transfer of vehicle control from the driver to automation and vice versa represents a particular challenge.

In the course of the “Energiewende”, the existing centralized energy supply system will get more decentralized due to strongly volatile input of renewable energy into the distribution grid level. The research project is aimed at studying how energy supply can be regionalized on the distribution grid level in order to minimize the exchange of electric power between the transmission grid and distribution grid and to reduce the required grid extension activities. The model location for the research project is the city of Kirchheimbolanden in Rhineland-Palatinate.

ARCHES

The aim of the Helmholtz Future Project ARCHES is the development of heterogeneous, autonomous and interconnected robotic systems in a consortium of the Helmholtz Centers DLR, AWI, GEOMAR and KIT from 2018 to 2020. And not only the robots are heterogeneous, the future fields of application span from the environmental monitoring of the oceans over technical crisis intervention to the exploration of the solar system.
